What is Magnetic Coercivity

Coercivity is the reverse magnetic field strength required to reduce the magnetic strength to zero after a magnetic material is magnetized to saturation. It measures a magnetic material's ability to resist demagnetization. A higher coercivity value means the material is less likely to have its magnetism altered by external magnetic fields and can better maintain its own magnetic state.

The magnitude of coercivity directly determines the "character" of magnetic materials. Materials with low coercivity, like "grass swaying in the wind," are easily influenced by external factors and thus are called soft magnetic materials. In contrast, materials with high coercivity are like "indestructible diamonds"they can resist external interference well, maintaining their magnetism consistently. These are known as hard magnetic materials and are often used in fields with high demands for magnetic stability.

For example, the magnets in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) machines rely on high-coercivity hard magnetic materials to maintain a stable strong magnetic field, safeguarding medical diagnostics. Drive motors in new energy vehicles require high-power-density hard magnetic materials to provide continuous torque; the high coercivity of NdFeB hard magnetic materials prevents demagnetization in high-temperature, high-current environments, ensuring stable vehicle range and power output. The alternating magnetic fields generated by rotating wind turbine blades impact the magnets, but high-coercivity NdFeB permanent magnets can withstand such impacts, maintaining stable magnetic field strength and enabling efficient conversion of wind energy to electricity. NdFeB permanent magnets can generate strong magnetic fields in small volumes, and when paired with coils, they efficiently convert electrical energy to sound. The vibration of mobile phones relies on the rapid interaction between hard magnets and electromagnetic coils in the motor; the strong magnetism of NdFeB ensures stable power even during high-frequency vibrations, making vibration feedback accurate and sensitive.

Thanks to this "hardcore" feature of high coercivity, NdFeB permanent magnets play a crucial role in high-end manufacturing, clean energy, medical equipment, media filtration, and other fields, continuously driving technological progress and industrial development.
